A fuse in its simplest form - is simply a short piece of wire that is weaker than the circuit it is protecting. When the current flowing through the circuit exceeds the fuse rating, the fuse wire melts - breaking the circuit.
Normally aluminum, zinc, copper, or an alloy that will provide predictable characteristics and blow under the conditions the fuse was designed for.

You will find the fuse box just under the steering column near where you release the hood. open it up and on the inside of the panel, there will be a diagram for the fuses. A fuse is made with the material which offers high resistivity. When a large amount of electric current passes through the fuse, heat above the melting point of fuse is produced. Hence, the fuse melts.
The fuse is bolted to two terminals inside the fuse box, it is possible to remove the part that contains the 100a fuse by releasing the retaining clips on the fuse holder and pulling up, then the two wires can be unbolted and the fuse replaced. You have to look very closely to locate the plastic clips, release them with a small screwdriver wile pulling up on the fuse. I replaced the 40Amp fuse next to the 100 amp fuse!!! not so easy in a 1996 Toyota corolla!!! First unbolt entire fuse box. Take bottom covers off fuse box. Pull out three fuses together from fuse box from bottom side. Then you can unbolt the fuse you want. Then you can push fuse block back up inside big fuse assembly and the bolt back up and replace top!!!
