What is given to the pilgrim depends on which skull of John the Baptist is visited, as there are several. They include his skull at Rome, Damascus, Amiens, Antioch, Munich and southern France. No more than one of these skulls could be genuine and, given the commercial value of a church owning such a valuable relic, probably none is genuine.

Whatever is given in return for the fee paid to see the purported relic at any of these places, it has no more than intrinsic value.
