It may all depend on what it was the he stole and how valuable it was. A suggestion would be to appear before the judge acting as contrite and remorseful as possible and throw himself on the mercy of the court. Due to his imminent departure for the Navy the judge MIGHT treat him leniently, HOWEVER - don't look for the charge to be dismissed entirely - that would be asking too much.

If this is your first arrest and you shoplifted 150 in clothes and they found vicodin in purse what will happen to you?

It all depends on where you live. And where you shoplifted from. The police and loss prevention cannot look through your things unless you have given consent. If they do search through your belongings, they cannot use anything they find against you.

Your friend shoplifted and barely got away what will happen?

Either it scared him "straight" or he feels more invulnerable than ever. Hopefully it scared him straight. At some point, if he keeps it up, he will inevitably be caught. If he is 17 by then, things will be very bad, as it will be on his record for years.
