(I'm aware of the term "green chemistry", but it's not really something a layperson could "use" in any meaningful way. My general impression is that "green chemistry" is a lot harder, in the sense of it being more complicated or requiring materials or conditions like hypercritical water that are difficult to obtain or sustain, in contrast to the "let's throw some sulfuric acid in the pot and see what happens" approach. In other words, there are definite advantages to "green chemistry," but unfortunately "being easy for someone without a billion dollar physical plant and/or research investment to do" is not typically one of them. This may change given sufficient time.)
The idea behind green chemistry is to leave no net impact on the envrionment. Instead of using reagents that can only be used once and then must be stored indefinatly or cleansed, green chemistry stives to use re-useable or impact neutral reagents. This is extremely important for the long term continuation of chemistry because it means there won't be barrels of dangerous organic compounds that can only be used once filling up landfills or being cleaned by other dangerous compounds. Also with reuseable or impact neutral reagents you don't have to worry about the chemical spills associated with the storage of used or expired reagents.
