Hardware is an important part of modern communication systems. to study modern communication system it is necessary to know the types of hardware components that are used in communication systems. a telecommunication network consists of 5 categories of components:

1. terminals :

the choice of a terminal for a particular application is an imp. aspect in the overall design procedure for a communication network. several variables must be considered in order to select the correct terminal for the job.

2. telecommunication processors:

these are processors which support data transmission and reception b/w terminal and computers. these devices such as modems ,switches and routers perform a variety of control and support functions in telecommunication networks.

3. telecommunication channels:

telecommunication channels are the means by which data are transmitted and received. these channels use combination of media such as copper wire and coaxial cables to interconnect the other components of telecommunication networks.

4. host computers, front end computers and network servers:

computer of all sizes and types are connected by telecommunication network so that they can carry out there information processing assignment.

5. terminal communication modes:

from the communication point of view terminal operate in two modes.

(A) free wheeling mode .

(B) a controlled mode

free wheeling operations means that transmission of data from the terminals is under the control of terminal operator.
