It is VERY important. Besides helping avoid damage to the environment, rules for handling HAZMAT materials were developed to prevents catastrophes, such as the explosion of the freighter that destroyed much of Galveston TX, or the accidental release of poison gas that killed thousands of people in Bhopal India. It is also important from a legal standpoint- in the US, the EPA has levied very large fines against persons that violate HAZMAT rules, and has sent several to prison.
