The mystery snail is the most popular of aquarium snails. They are common to the pet trade being the aquatic snail of choice for most freshwater fish tanks. The ones that are brown are also known as the apple snail. However, the most popular of the species are the ones that are golden in color. Pomacea Bridgesii (mystery snails) are a popular freshwater aquatic snail in the aquarium comminity. They need 1 male and 1 female to reproduce and are not hermaphoditic. They lay their eggs above the waterline, thus making it easy to control their population in the home aquarium. They will eat algae but will not eat health aquatic plants. Average lifespan is 1-2 years. Their lifespan is highly influenced by water temperature. They come is a wide array of colors, ivory, gold, blue, wild type, olive, black, purple and jade. Within those colors there are different variations based upon foot color and shell base color and the presence of stripes or lack thereof. As an owner and breeder of mystery snails I must say they are very interesting to watch and each have their own personalities. A wonderful addition to the home aquaria.
