Honolulu has a rich and varied history and is significant for both the United States and the world as a whole. Honolulu was the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom. The oldest Christian church building (Kawaiahao Church) in Hawaii, built during the Kingdom era, is located just south of downtown. Honolulu has the oldest Chinatown in the United States, as well as the only true palace in the U.S. After Hawaii became a state in the early part of the twentieth century, Honolulu became the capital of the state. In the twentieth century, Honolulu held historical importance for the entire world due to its strategic location during World War II. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, just west of Honolulu, brought the United States into World War II.
