Hevron, one of the Four Holy Cities of Judaism, is considered holy due to its being the site of the Cave of Machpelah, also known as the Cave of the Patriarchs (from which Hevron gets its alternative name the City of the Patriarchs).

According to Judaism, Islam (Muslims call the cave Al-Haram Al Ibrahimi) and Christianity the cave is the burial place of Adam and Eve, Abraham (who purchased the cave from Ephron the Hittite for 400 shekels as a burial place for his wife, Sarah) and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah and Jacob and Leah. Other Jewish sources claim that the head of Esau, Jacob's brother, is also in the cave and Islamic sources state that Joseph from Genesis (as opposed to the New Testament Joseph) is buried there too.
