There is a skin color-based elitism in Iberoamerican countries that was inherited from their parents, the Spanish. The lighter one's skin, the more highly esteemed they are and therefore, the more prideful they can be... and are expected to be. Of course, the darker the color, the more retiring and humble one is compelled and expected to be. Conversation about it can seem brusque and tactless to the uninitiated, but that's how they speak. In the US, you don't hear Afro-Americans addressed as "Black," as if it were a given name, but it happens all the time in Mexico... and the black people suffer it. It's one of the chief reasons that the darker skinned descendants of the indigenous peoples living in the remote mountainous areas southwest of Mexico City are counted at the bottom of Mexican society. Skin color and thoughts, ideas, desires, and prejudices about it, are a significant component of Mexican popular music. "Morenita," while literally meaning, "little brown [female] [one]" is a Mexican term of endearment meaning 'sweetheart' or 'honey," which is used by people of all skin shades. It's a complex fact of life/culture; one that will not disappear soon.
