Is generally a higher compression engine, but the idi means indirect injection it first injects fuel I'n a pre chamber to help get it burning then it moves to the main combustion chamber. This pretty much has the same affect is a split shot on a later 7.3 powerstroke
International Truck and Engine Company makes the PowerStroke Diesel engine for Ford. They also made the 6.9L IDI engine and 7.3L IDI engine. They made the 6.9L IDI, 7.3L IDI, 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel, 6.0L Powerstroke Diesel, and 6.4L Powerstroke Diesel. Ford strayed away from International for 2011 because of many problems with the 6.0L and 6.4L. For 2011, Ford is making its own diesel engine, the 6.7L Powerstroke Turbo Diesel V8.
6.2L idi (indirect injection) not the best diesel trucks..
In 1992 the only diesel engine ford offered in it's F250/350 trucks was the 7.3 IDI naturally aspirated diesel. It wasn't a powerstroke engine. Powerstroke engines were introduced in 1994 and were direct injection diesel engines. A 1992 7.3 IDI did not have a turbo.
The 6.9L IDI Ford diesel - 21mpg highway / 16mpg city The 7.3L IDI Ford diesel - 21mpg highway / 16mpg city The 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel - 20mpg highway / 16mpg city The 6.0L Powerstroke Diesel - 17mpg highway / 15mpg city The 6.4L Powerstroke Diesel - 16.5mpg highway/ 14.5mpg city The 6.7L Powerstroke Diesel - 21mpg highway / 17.5mpg city
Indirect injection (IDI) produces less noise.
Here's a few million mile pickup truck diesel engines - - - 7.3L IDI International (Ford), 6.9L IDI International (Ford), 7.3L Powerstroke Turbo Diesel (Ford), and the 5.9L Cummins I-6 engine (Dodge.) Of the newest diesel engines offered in the Big 3 trucks, I'd say #1 is the 6.7L Powerstroke Diesel, #2 6.6L Duramax, #3 6.7L Cummins.
International
Does not have a cam sensor on a 7.3L IDI this engine is not computer controlled.
So far, the 7.3L Powerstroke Turbo Diesel V8. But the old 7.3L PSD is running a tight race with the 05 to 07 6.0L Powerstroke Turbo Diesel V8s. They have been proven to be reliable. The only bad 6.0L PSDs were the 03.5 and 04s. Every Ford diesel made has had some good reliability. If you get an upgraded turbo on the 6.4L and a DPF Delete Kit you are good to go for a high mileage diesel. The 6.9L IDI Ford/International diesel was a great engine. Also, the 7.3L IDI Ford/International diesel engine. The 6.9L IDI and 7.3L IDI didn't have a turbo OR great power, but they were great engines. I am liking the new 2011 6.7L Powerstroke Turbo Diesel V8 that is in the new Super Duty trucks. It seems like it will be a very reliable and long-lasting high-mileage engine. There really isn't a "best" Ford diesel now days, but the early 6.0Ls and the 6.4Ls are definetly the pieces of sh*t in this round!
yes the tranny will fit from 1983 to the 7.3 idi all used the same trannys 7.3 idi went up to 1994 they are all the same bellhousings
7.3L IDI 10 qts I think they added more if it had a turbo.
7.3L IDI 10-12qts for 7.3L DI (power stroke) 14-15qts
