In Christianity, the cross symbolizes Christian's believes that Jesus was put on a cross as a sacrifice to humanity and to enable anyone who sins to get into God's kingdom. They use the cross to remind themselves that Christ sacrificed himself for the sake of the human race.

Although Islam states that Jesus was never crossed, but replaced by a person with very similar physical aspects.

Christianity begins with God. God is perfect, however we humans are not. The problem with this is that sinful humans cannot stand in the presence of God, and the price for sin is death.

So God sent his son Jesus into human history to atone for our sins. Prior to Jesus, people made animal sacrifices to cover their sin. Jesus was born of a virgin, and was fully man and fully God. He lived a perfect life, but the religious leaders of the time hated Him, so they accused Him of blasphemy when He claimed to be the Son of God.

So they had him tried, and Jesus was sentenced to death by crucifixion. He was beaten, spat on and humiliated, and then was forced to carry His own cross up a hill, and was then nailed to it. He died on the cross later that night. Because He was God, Jesus' death atoned for the sins of the whole world. Jesus rose again three days later, thus proving that He was, and remains, God.

But, the point of this and the answer to your question is that the cross is so significant because it reminds us of the sacrifice that Jesus made. He loved us so much that while we were sinners and hated Him, He was still willing to die so that we could have a chance for eternal life.

The Cross represents life to the believer in Christ. It symbolises the death that Jesus died to purchase their salvation. To the world, and those unsaved, it is foolishness, but to us who believe, it typifies the place and time when they were brought into glory. That is why Christians do no trivialize its significance.

Through the cross, they are "dead" to the world, and vice versa. Without the cross, there is no victory sound. For herein was God's lamb slain, that we might live, and give the abundance of life, goodness, graciousness and godliness to those we who come across our paths as we pass through this life. The cross represents our victory over sin and death. All through Jesus Christ. Something happened, that we cannot deny. That sacrifice remains in history the pivotal change to the development and freedom of mankind. Such is the power of the cross!
