if 8 is pre-cs2 which im 99% sure , blending options has been introduced which makes brushes and stuff a million times better and a few keyboard shortcut and interface differences. That's the photoshop I recommend to others. or cs3, never liked CS4 and 5 im too lazy to get the trial.
NO. Photoshop is the best image editor. There are other very good ones but none out performs photoshop. In my opinion the best photoshop version for normal image editing is 7. The larger size and more cumbersom interface of the CS versions make them slower and harder to learn. Also photoshop 7 is more stable due to CS being way to complex. The limited Photoshop elements version is also very good and i have just recently switched from 7 to elements for most of my "professional" work due to its so fast and easy to use.
Their essentially the same. The biggest difference is using of the Control("apple key") on the Mac with using the Ctrl key in Windows when using shortcuts
