The only real difference is that their capabilities are much more specific and much more narrow. Most mobile platforms use a RISC (Reduced Instruction Computer) based processor capable of FAR less than desktops (which are typically CISC- Complete instruction set computer). Most are also not x86 (Intel/AMD/Via), PowerPC (Apple/IBM), or Motorola (Apple) compatible.
Some may be quite powerful still, however, such as the case of Android and iPhone systems.
