The 2.7L didn't come out until 1998. So reask question with correct year, make, and model information.
In a 2004 Dodge Intrepid : The 2.7 litre V6 engine has a timing CHAIN ( also , the 3.5 litre V6 engine has a timing BELT )

It must have a TIMING CHAIN because Gates ( they make timing belts etc. ) does not list a timing belt for a 1997 Dodge Intrepid 3.3 liter V6 engine

This engine does not use a timing belt, it does use a timing chain instead which is inside of the engine behind the front cover
On the 3.5 intrepid engine, the water pump is run by the timing "belt"- no timing chain on this motor. Not sure about the 3.3 motor. On the 3.3L the water pump is driven by the serpentine belt.
3.2L, in the front of the motor behind the front engine covers. 2.7L, no belt, is a timing chain.
after replacing points in engine, can correct timing be done to engine if engine is not run.
