The cable is what is called a "coaxial cable" and is made of four parts:

  1. a copper wire at the center for the signal
  2. plastic small cell foam insulator of a precisely controlled diameter
  3. a copper wire mesh tube around the plastic insulator for the shield/ground
  4. a thin plastic insulator jacket to protect the cable from damage
All four of these parts share the same common axis as the central copper wire (part 1), thus making the cable coaxial.
