The Cathedral in the middle of the square, founded on 1064, was the proof of the power of Pisa in the Middle Ages.
It was dedicated to the Assumption of St.Mary and the tower is part of the church, like the big Baptistery dedicated to St.John or the cemetery called "Campo Santo".
The Cathedral, that being the main church of the city in Italian language is known as the "Duomo", it is also a Primatial church, being the archbishop of Pisa the Primate of Sardinia and Corsica.
The whole area it is called "Piazza del Duomo" (Cathedral square) although people tend to call it "piazza dei miracoli" (square of the miracles) after a poetical expression by Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio (1910).
