Self-governance is an abstract concept that refers to several scales of organization. It may refer to personal conduct or family units but more commonly refers to larger scale activities.
The idea of self-government is found in the first three words of the Constitution, "We the People". Rather than being governed outside by the British, they would have their own government and become their own country.
