• While many people believe horses need shoes, they are actually better off without them providing they have the right diet and care.
• Also, while many horses are kept in stalls, its better for them to live outside in a pasture 24/7.
• Horses do best when allowed to nible on grass or hay all day long. It helps their digestive system and prevents gastric ulcers.
• Horses can learn tricks like sit, lie down, roll over, bow, smile, yes, no, kiss, rear, hug and many more.
• Horses have different personalities, just like us.
• There is only one TRUE wild horse breed left, the Prezwalski's Horse. All other "wild" horses are actually feral- they are desendants of once domesticated horses.
• Most horses only have 4 gaits, the walk, jog (also called a trot), lope (or what English riders refer to as the canter), and gallop.
• Other horses, called gaited horses, have other gaits. Theres the running walk, the rack, the pace, the tolt, the foxtrot, and much, much more.
• Horses are measured in "hands" with each hand measuring 4 inches. they also have points, and each point is worth an inch. So a horse that is 10.3hh (hands high) would be 43 inches, because 4 times 10 equals 40, and then you add the 3 inches from the .3 to get 43 inches. but, if it was an inch taller, it would cycle up to 11hh, because once it reaches 10.4, the .4 means 4 inches, which equals a hand.
• Horses have different catagories. There is the pony, a horse that is less than 14.2 hands high. Then the normal riding horse, which is over 14.2hh, and the draft horse, which is a horse that was bred for hauling things. They are often big boned, have a lot of hair on their lower legs called feathers, and are tall -often over 17hh.
• Horses are also grouped into hotbloods, warmbloods and coldbloods. Coldbloods are the draft horses. Hotbloods are the fast racing horses with a lot of energy. warmbloods are the most common and are the cross between a coldblood and a hotblood. Most riding horses are warmbloods.
