It depends on what engine you have. Get a manual on your car from the parts store. It is fairly simple work. Remove the serpentine belt, probably should replace that when reasembling. Remove the alternator, remove wires first of course; only three bolts. Remove the idler pulley from the front of the water pump; only three bolts. Then finally remove the four bolts holding the old pump from the pump housing. Prepare the housing for the new gasket by cleaning completly, the old gasket from the housing, very important. Apply the reccomended gasket sealer to both sides of the gasket and reasemble in reverse order of teardown.

How do you change a timing belt on a 1998 Chevy Cavalier?

A '98 Cavalier Z24 has a timing chain, not a belt. Currently in the process of changing the water pump, and the timing chain is involved. We are looking at replacing the chain while there because it is a very involved process. You should get a Chilton manual, well worth the money. Will let you know more after completion.

In my '87 accord, replacing the water pump was a big ordeal at the shop - $550 was a bargain price for the job. it involved the same work as replacing the timing belt - which was only $50 extra at that point. Not that this is a specific answer, but the point is that it's hard. Rick
