After having consulted your doctor and surgeon and having made the decision to undergo the operation. You will first have to undergo a health check to make sure that you are unlikely to have adverse reactions to anesthesia, have no infections that might affect the procedure, heart checks, blood tests; urine tests all to make sure you are in good enough health to undergo the procedure without complications.
On the day of the procedure you will be required to only have a light meal no less then 12 hours before the operation.

After some preliminary last minute tests the anesthesiologist may have you take a tablet to make sure that your stomach is settled down.

You are taken to the operating theater and given anesthesia
Once you are under the influence of the anesthetic the area around the elbow is thoroughly scrubbed and sterilized with an antiseptic. Then A tourniquet is placed to the upper portion of the arm to help slow the flow of blood.
At this time an incision of about six inches over the elbow joint. The incision cuts through muscle and other tissue, finally exposing the elbow joint.
At this point a cut is made to remove pa part of the end of the ulna allowing the forearm bones to be rotated out of the way. Now parts of the humerus are removed with the saw. Precise tools and instruments are used to make certain that the cuts made will align properly when the implant is inserted.
First the middle portion at the end of the humerus is removed. The bones in the arm have relatively soft, porous bone tissue in the center. This part the "canal." Some of this soft bone is removed from the canal of the humerus to make way for the implant. Special instruments are used to do this and also help shape the canal to fit the shape of the implant.
Then, the canal of the ulna goes through a similar process.
Attaching the Implants
The elbow implant is made up of two metal stems and these are connected by a metal locking pin. This pin passes through the ends of both stems, The moving parts are lined with a strong plastic material, that serves as a bush allowing the elbow to bend.
Before the stems are inserted, a cement is inserted into the cleared area of the canals that will hold the stems in place.
When the cement has hardened, the pin to hold the two implanted stems together is inserted and locked into place forming the new elbow hinge.
Closing the Wound
If necessary, the surgeon may adjust the ligaments that surround the elbow to achieve the best possible elbow function.
When everything is in place the surgeon sews the tissue back into their correct position. A plastic tube may be inserted into the wound to allow liquids to drain from the site during the first few hours after surgery. The opening of the skin is then sewn together, finally the site of the operation is wrapped in a sterile bandage and you are taken to the recovery room.
