What work can you do with a replacement elbow?

I am not sure. I am a carpenter. I had my right elbow replaced. Needless to say, swinging a hammer with any force as I used to was inadvisable but I am still able to do most of the things that I used to do. I admit though that I take care not to put excessive strain on it. The thing is only glued in place wit epoxy resin, and re-fixing it is not a popular pastime among surgeons.

What does surgery involve for pinched nerve in the elbow?

This procedure is known as an ulnar nerve decompression
The ulnar nerve is a nerve supplies sensation and strength to partof the hand and forearm. when it become compressed or trapped between bones of the elbow. remedy this situation a procedure called Ulnar nerve decompression is performed. different procedures can be used to relieve the entrapment of the nerve at the elbow. The nerve may be simply decompressed. Or it may be decompressed and moved to a new location. Or A medial epicondylectomy which entails the removal of a bony prominence in the elbow that which may be pressing on the nerve, may be performed. I had the epicondylectomy done as part of an operation involving an elbow replacement so I can not give you an impression of the surgery. However I had the operation about two months ago and immediately after the op there was very strong tingling in and around my pinkie the ring finger and up that side of my hand, I still feel a slight tingling most of the time at present but it is getting constantly better. I have also noted that the strength in that hand has improved considerably.

Physiotherapy after elbow replacement surgery?

The elbow joint is a hinge joint. When it has been replaced with a prosthesis there is always a lot of bruising and swelling as a result not to mention cuts that need to heal properly. the fact is that it leaves the whole area rather sore and sensitive to move. therefore as the swelling goes down and the wound heals. the elbow will need to be deliberately moved repeatedly to the straight position and to the bent position with the aid of the other arm to loosen it up and get maximum flex back out of it. In my particular case the damage to my original elbow was such that I even have to get my hand turning properly again and need to exercise the hand and fingers to get the muscles and coordination back in order. The process's can be tedious but don't loose heart, Persevere, I am finding improvement in movement strength and comfort every day.

Continuing from the previous section that I donated.

within a couple of weeks I found that the swelling and most of the discomfort from the operation had gone and I was getting a fair bit of use out of the elbow already even without any particular phis therapy. the only thing necessary once I was able was to just gently straighten and bend my arm as far as was able with the aid of my other arm. the same applies with the radial movement of the hand, just turn the palm of your hand to face upwards and flat out as if you are expecting some one to put something in it. repeat these movements as often as you can handle and you ill find the arm will be just about back to normal within a couple of months. I had an ulnar decompression and this caused numbness in the pinkie side of the hand this is also constantly improving.

What is involved in the actual procedure of having elbow replacement surgery done?

After having consulted your doctor and surgeon and having made the decision to undergo the operation. You will first have to undergo a health check to make sure that you are unlikely to have adverse reactions to anesthesia, have no infections that might affect the procedure, heart checks, blood tests; urine tests all to make sure you are in good enough health to undergo the procedure without complications.

On the day of the procedure you will be required to only have a light meal no less then 12 hours before the operation.

You may also be supplied with a special disinfectant cleaning agent with witch you will use in the two showers before the operation just to make sure that you are as sterile as possible before the procedure.

After some preliminary last minute tests the anesthesiologist may have you take a tablet to make sure that your stomach is settled down.

You will then be hooked up to an iv

You are taken to the operating theater and given anesthesia

Once you are under the influence of the anesthetic the area around the elbow is thoroughly scrubbed and sterilized with an antiseptic. Then A tourniquet is placed to the upper portion of the arm to help slow the flow of blood.

At this time an incision of about six inches over the elbow joint. The incision cuts through muscle and other tissue, finally exposing the elbow joint.

At this point a cut is made to remove pa part of the end of the ulna allowing the forearm bones to be rotated out of the way. Now parts of the humerus are removed with the saw. Precise tools and instruments are used to make certain that the cuts made will align properly when the implant is inserted.

First the middle portion at the end of the humerus is removed. The bones in the arm have relatively soft, porous bone tissue in the center. This part the "canal." Some of this soft bone is removed from the canal of the humerus to make way for the implant. Special instruments are used to do this and also help shape the canal to fit the shape of the implant.

Then, the canal of the ulna goes through a similar process.

Attaching the Implants

The elbow implant is made up of two metal stems and these are connected by a metal locking pin. This pin passes through the ends of both stems, The moving parts are lined with a strong plastic material, that serves as a bush allowing the elbow to bend.

Before the stems are inserted, a cement is inserted into the cleared area of the canals that will hold the stems in place.

When the cement has hardened, the pin to hold the two implanted stems together is inserted and locked into place forming the new elbow hinge.

Closing the Wound

If necessary, the surgeon may adjust the ligaments that surround the elbow to achieve the best possible elbow function.

When everything is in place the surgeon sews the tissue back into their correct position. A plastic tube may be inserted into the wound to allow liquids to drain from the site during the first few hours after surgery. The opening of the skin is then sewn together, finally the site of the operation is wrapped in a sterile bandage and you are taken to the recovery room.
