Iron Man is about the selfish, famous inventor Tony Stark, CEO of Stark Industries, a weapon facility, who is kidnapped by the evil alliance known as the Ten Rings.
They say they want Tony to build Stark Industries' newest advancement, the Jericho Missile, and they have the pieces to build the weapon, but Tony instead builds an iron suit to escape, with the help of his fellow captive, Yinsen. They also build a miniature Arc Reactor to keep Tony alive, due to shrapnel nearly entering his heart. Yinsen is later killed when he is stalling while the suit is powering up, and Tony escapes unscathed (if you call your broken iron suit, and being buried in sand unscathed).
Back in his lab/home, Tony decides to recreate the Iron Man suit, with some extreme updates, naming the file "Mark II." The Mark II is a sleek, human sized supersuit, increasing strength and enabling flight and repulsor technology, and even a chest-mounted super ray named the Unibeam.
After Tony flies too high, and the suit freezes up, Tony decides to remake the suit with the inability to freeze up in high altitude. He also gives it a snazzy hot rod red paint job, and extra strength, physically, and more repulsor power.
Later, the story leads to show that Tony's business friend Obediah Stane hired the Ten Rings to kill Tony. And Obediah has the Ten Rings scour the wreckage of the Mark I Suit, so he could use inspiration for his own "Iron Monger" suit.
To power the Mark III Suit, Tony creates a new Miniaturized Arc Reactor. And, later Obediah comes to suck the Arc Reactor Mark II from Tony's chest to power his Iron Monger Mark I suit. Luckily, Tony's assistant Pepper Potts, packaged up the Arc Reactor Mark I, and marked it "Proof that Tony Stark has a heart".
Tony breaks open the glass and reinstalls it in his Arc Reactor socket in his chest. Tony suits up in the Mark III and takes off to battle Obediah Stane in the Iron Monger Mark I. To defeat the Iron Monger, Tony lures Obediah to the roof of Stark Industries, and has Pepper overload the giant Arc Reactor that powers the factory. It nearly kills Tony, but succeeds in doing so to Obediah.
At a press conference, Tony admits he's the "Iron Man" after reading a cover story card aloud saying Iron Man's a bodyguard.
