Animals may resemble another for one of two reasons. The first is mimicry, as demonstrated by insects such as hoverflies that resemble wasps in order to scare off would-be predators that wish to avoid getting stung. The second is convergent evolution, when animals resemble one another because they inhabit a similar niche within their ecosystem - an example would be the wolf and the thylacine, otherwise known as the Tasmanian wolf.
