When an antibiotic cannot kill a particular strain of bacteria, that bacteria is said to be resistant. The most well-known example of this is MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus (or "Staph") is a common bacteria found on the skin of most healthy people. If it gets under the skin, it can cause minor flare-ups like pimples or boils, or more major illnesses like blood infections and pneumonia. Staph is treated by a broad-spectrum antibiotic called methicillin. Some strains of Staph have become resistant to the bacteria, and are then called methicillin-resistant. Most MRSA infections take place in hospitals or health care facilities. These are called health care-associated MRSA, or HA-MRSA. Recently, some other MRSA infections have been occurring in the general population. These are called community-associated MRSA, or CA-MRSA.

Can you give the same bacterial infection back to the person who gave it to you?

Yes, our bodies are unable to produce immunity to most bacteria from having had an infection by them before, unlike the viruses (like those that cause colds and flu) that leave you with immunity once your body fights the battle and wins. Thankfully, bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics that actually kill the infecting bacteria outright. Viruses are not alive, so they can not be killed. Your body's immune system must fight the viruses until it makes the needed antibodies to attach to and totally inactivate the virus particles.
