What are the advantages and disadvantages about being a psychiatrist?

The benefits of being a psychiatrist is not just the money. It is the joy of helping someone restore their life. You are able to search the depths of their mind and help whatever might be holding them back from succeding or reaching their goals. Through pyschiatry you are able to create friendships and really get to know someone for who they are, not only their problems.

One of the worst "cons" (pun intended) is having to learn the nonsense espoused by the likes of Sigmund Freud and Albert Kinsey in order to pass college level exams.
A pro is that a Physiciatrist is well paid, another is that through dealing with different types of people you might learn new things not only with experience but with your life.

A con is that you might have to deal with headcases or crazies or psycho-paths and you'll need to have the right study to do that!

• Medical college is hard to get into unless you have family connections
• Interning is physically demanding -- long hours- little sleep
• constant pressure to not make mistakes- even a small error can kill somebody
• Pressure to tend seriously ill patients - hard to schedule days off
• Pressure to tend patients who can not afford to pay .
• Constant necessity to keep up with new medical advances

Pros

• You are performing an essential public servce
• Better pay than other doctorates
• Gratitude from patients that you help
• General community respect for your profession
• New challenges continually appear.
