All work of body systems that maintain homeostasis are largely unnoticed. We only notice when one or more systems cannot maintain homeostasis. So as examples, in health, the body systems automatically regulate or control:

  • causes symptoms of poor brain function; others may notice the signs before we notice our own symptoms-- for example, being disoriented to person, place, time etc.
  • attempts to keep our brains infused with O2 rich blood and glucose because the central nervous system controls so much in our bodies
  • changes our heart rates and circulation
  • increases our respirations
  • attempts to keep red blood cell production in line with body needs
  • increases SED rate if inflammation
  • produces White Blood cells (WBCs) if infection
  • works harder to maintain exchange of O2 and CO2 - from lungs down to the cells and vice versa -- If unable, the body attempts to reroute smaller blood vessels and in some diseases such as COPD, changes how we use O2 and CO2
  • attempts to keep glucose levels within acceptable levels - if it fails, the body produces symptoms to alert us of falling blood sugar. But rising blood sugars may go unnoticed in Diabetes.
  • attempts to keep hormones in balance
  • attempts to regulate body and skin temperature
  • attempts to cool the body through sweating
  • attempts to manage how we can swallow saliva, food, liquids
  • attempts to alert us to thirst and hunger, or produces symptoms
  • attempts to processes food, and produces waste, or produces symptoms
  • attempts to maintain complimentary and inverse relationships between various electrolytes, example the Na and K+ (sodium and potassium) inverse relationship - or produces symptoms
  • attempts to control how muscle cells use electrolytes and minerals , or produces symptoms
  • mitochondria in cells increase their work if high WBCs and rush in to prevent or control infection but produces increased symptoms from infection
  • attempts to maintain balance, coordination , or produces symptoms
  • attempts to maintain sight, hearing, and other senses , or produces symptoms
  • attempts to maintain sensory input from sensory nerves , or produces symptoms
  • much more...
