Ever feel dizzy or nauseous while riding in a car? Has it made you vomit, or break out into a sweat? Ever get sea sick? These are all symptoms of motion sickness, or kinetosis, and it is a pretty awful feeling. The movement of a car, the movement of sea water, a plane that is bouncing around from turbulence, a roller coaster, or ride that spins in circles, can all trigger motion sickness. These movements basically affect our sense of balance, our equilibrium. For some people, just thinking about these motions will make them sick. What actually happens to make a person feel so awful? Motion is sensed by the brain in three different ways. There are signals that come from the inner ear, which senses motion, the eyes, which see what is happening, and proprioceptors, deep tissues of the surfaces of the body, meaning you can feel it, but not see it. When these three paths send conflicting messages to the brain, the result is motion sickness. Many times the sickness will go away when the motion stops, but it has been known to last several days. There are various treatments for motion sickness. If traveling by car, over the counter drugs, such as antihistamines, work well if taken about a half an hour before traveling. If taken when the symptoms occur, it may not work as well. Always consult a doctor for children under 12 years of age. A doctor can also prescribe medications to help. Scopolamine patches, which are placed behind the ear, have proven successful. Acupressure bracelets are drug-free, but have to be put over the pressure point for it to work. There is a natural oil that is applied behind the ear and the skin then absorbs it. An electronic band, which is worn on the wrist, sends out low-level pulses to calm the stomach. Staying away from certain foods, like greasy, spicy, and acidic foods can help. The only way one will know what helps is to try any or all of these treatments. Everyone is different, therefore, different treatments will work for different people. If nothing does work, see a doctor.
It does not rise to the level of more serious ailments like diabetes, cancer or heart disease. Sometimes, the symptoms can come on quite unexpectedly. When you are traveling in any kind of conveyance and your stomach starts to act up, you probably are experiencing motion sickness. Motion sickness or kinetosis occurs when the body and the mind are not in synchronization in a traveling vehicle. Approximately one in every three people suffer motion sickness to some degree. Any movement that the body can feel, but you don’t see coming, can trigger this uncomfortable feeling. Getting car sick is pretty common. If you are driving in a car and the road suddenly dips and then rises, you could feel some level of discomfort. A few more dips and rises and you may find yourself ready to vomit. Sea sickness is another form of motion sickness than many people experience. If you are out in some rough waters and the boat or ship you are on, tosses up and down and side to side, you may become nauseous. You might even become dizzy and disoriented, unable to retain your balance and equilibrium. Usually, you get seasick when you are inside a ship and have no view of the sea. Stepping out on deck, can sometimes alleviate the symptoms. In severe cases, taking dramamine can help stop the queasy feeling. It has been reported that almost 50% of all astronauts experience space sickness, a form of motion sickness that occurs because the eyes and mind can not process the extreme speed and movement of the space craft. Astronauts undergo special training in a centrifuge to test their tolerance for gravitational pull (G-Force) and the motion sickness it may cause. You can get used to living with motion sickness. Knowing in advance what situations make you most susceptible to this problem, you can prepare yourself mentally and usually avoid motion sickness. If you are going on a rollercoaster or an amusement ride that shakes you all about, anticipating the twists, drops and jerking movements, makes it easier on your body. Some people just can’t help it and may get sick and throw up anyway. Well, the good thing about motion sickness is it is over quickly and you’ll feel better in a few minutes.
