What type of boats were used for the British soldiers to travel to France in world war 1?

The Brits developed their own Landing Craft Tank (LCT) MK1 and II in 1940. Those were used in early British landing operations. After the US entered the war the MK III, IV, V and VI were jointly developed and built by the US and Britain from 1942 onward. The Brits developed the Landing Craft Machinery LCM in 1924 it was upgraded many times and used through WWII adopted by the US Army, the LCM was primarily for delivering large amounts of cargo to the beaches. The USMC used the Higgins Boat, LCP-Landing Craft Personnel and LCVP (Vehicles and Personnel in the Pacific theatre). The only difference was the width of the ramp, the LCVP having a wider ramp. The British/Australians purchased some number of LCPL's-Landing Craft Personnel Large from the Higgins factory in Louisiana.

What is the Present status of Vietnam Peoples Navy?

When the US departed South Vietnam it turned over, to the South Vietnamese government, US Air Force A-1 Skyraider fighter bombers (the aircraft seen in the recent film release, "Rescue Dawn"), helicopters, M-48 Patton tanks, M-113 APC's/ACAV's (Armored Personnel Carriers/Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicles), artillery, and an assortment of former US Navy "Brown Water Navy" riverine boats: approximately 240 PBR's (Patrol Boat River-as seen in the film "Apocalypse Now"), 100 Swift Boats (Patrol Craft Fast-Senator Kerry's boat), River Monitors (cannon armed River Battleships), Alpha boats (ASPB's-Assault Support Patrol Boats-often used for mine sweeping & the ONLY riverine boats built specifically from the keel up for the Vietnam War), and an assortment of old WWII landing craft such as LCM's (landing craft medium), LCVP's (landing Craft Vehicle Personnel), etc. All told, approximately 650 US Naval craft had been delivered to the South Vietnamese government upon departure of the US. When the north defeated the South in April 1975, MANY of those naval craft entered the North Vietnamese naval forces (those that had not been destroyed).

How long was a landing craft?

There is no one answer to this question. For the D-Day landings, there were several types of landing craft involved. The British and Commonwealth troops mainly used the Landing Craft Assault (LCA) which was about 41 1/2 ft long and carried up to 36 men. The American Rangers also used these craft to assault Pointe-du-Hoc. Many of the American troops came ashore in Landing Craft Vehicle and Personnel (LCVP), the famed Higgins boats, which were 36 ft 3 inches long and carried 36 men or 12 men and a jeep. The Landing Craft Mechanized (LCM) were also used. These craft were 45 ft long (LCM-2), 50 ft long (LCM-3), or almost 56 ft long (LCM-6). The LCM's carried between 60-100 troops. The Landing Craft Infantry Large (LCI-L) were about 158 1/2 ft long and carried 188-388 men. The DUKW, an amphibious truck, was 31 ft long and carried 25 troops. The Landing Craft Tank was between 112 to 119 ft long and carried 4 medium tanks. The Landing Vehicle Tracked (LVT), the amtrac of the Marines which operated mainly in the Pacific, was 21 1/2 to 26 ft long and could carry between 20 to 30 Marines ashore.

Did the us plan to invade Japan before the atomic bomb was dropped?

May I respectfully suggest: Codename DOWNFALL by Thomas B. Allen & Norman Polmar New York Simon & Shuster 1995 ISBN: 0-684-80406-9 Richard V. Horrell WW 2 Connections.com I was stationed on Ulithi Atoll in the South Pacific during World war 2.I was the coxwain on an LCVP Landing craft,My outfit was SLCU # 34.Before the Atom Bomb was dropped on Japan,Our Skipper told all of us to bring our boats out of the water to be overhauled. He stated that we had been given the honor of taking the 2nd Marine Division in the initial landing on the mainland of Japan. It was during this time we heard about the Bombing of Japan. Yes. Operation Olympic and Operation Coronet. The first was to be a landing on the southern coast of Honshu (southern most island of Japan). It would have been a "blood bath." The Japanese correctly guessed that is where we were going to land, and were ready and waiting for us. The second was to be an attack on Japan's main island Hokaido (spelling?). This was to take place near Tokyo bay when most of the Japanese army was in the south. Generally most experts of the time felt we would lose 1,000,000 soldiers in the invasion. I disagree. Based on our losses at Iwo Jima and Okinawa I think we would have lost many more. One thing that is not discussed is: How many Japanese would have died if we had invaded. My guess is in excess of 25,000,000. The Atomic Bomb saved many American and Japanese lives, and perhaps the "civilization" of Japan. Sad but true. Hope this helps, John CORRECTIONS!!!!! I stated tha the name of the southern island of Japan was Honshu (Dumb, dumb, dumb) I know better I was just tired. The southern island of Japan is Kyushu, and then I said the central island (Operation Coronet) was Hokkido (again stupid). The correct name is Honshu. I hope this did not cause you any trouble. Sorry, John
