The Lion starts out as Cowardly. He wants to be the courageous bearer of the title of King of the Beasts. But he ends up as King of the Grand Old Forest, from having killed the monstrous elephant-bodied, tree trunk size eight-legged Giant Spider.

In the 1939 film version, he is the equivalent in Dorothy Gale's dreams of the farmhand Zeke.

He was only ever called The Cowardly Lion in the original series of books, and never really gained a lasting name in any other media that stuck.

However, he was given the name Dan(or Dan De, or Dan D. or Dan D') in an old TV cartoon adaptation of the Wizard of Oz, to make a play on "dandelion"...I think he was actually referred to as "Dandy", now that I think of it.

For some bizarre reason lilke ( Jedermann) ( everyman)- the three good-guy monsters ( all male by the way) are ONLY referred to as the Scarecrow ( Bolger), Tin Man ( Haley) He is NOT referred to as a robot in either the book or the film. and the Cowardly Lion which was played by Bert Lahr. Why these characters were anonymous is anybody"s guess. it would obviously inhibit conversation.

The name 'Zeke' is given to the Lion in the beloved 1939 film version of 'The Wizard of Oz'. That isn't the Lion's name in Oz. But it is the name of the Kansas farmhand upon whom Dorothy Gale bases her imaginary, dream world companion, the Cowardly Lion.

No name other than Cowardly is given to the Lion in the original 1900 book edition by author and Oz series originator, Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919].

Like the other ( Good Guy monsters) he is only called the Cowardly Lion. this would pose problems in conversation, what. somehow they sidestepped that.
