Checks and balances is the system established in the Constitution by the Founding Fathers to ensure that one branch of the federal government cannot gain too much. Ex: Only Congress can make laws via passing bills but the President can veto a bill. However, the Congress can then override the President with 2/3 consent and by doing that they make sure that we basically don't "redo history" and become another England.

For example, Congress passes laws but the President has the power to veto them and the Supreme Court can rule them unconstitutional.

For instance: the legislative branch cannot introduce laws that conflict with the Constitution, and afterwards laws can be declared null and void by the judicial branch; executive powers can be controlled by laws made by the legislative branch or by not voting money for things the executive branch want to do. The legislative branch (our representatives) come up for regular re-election and can be voted out of office. The power of judges can be regulated by laws and are restricted by jurisdiction, and many lower judges have to come up for regular (re-)election.
