The half life of a radioactive element means that half the atoms in that element will decay in that amount of time eg Uranium 238 the most prevalent isotope in Uranium ore has a half life of 4.46 billion years, so half the atoms in any sample of this element will take this length of time to decay.
The half life of something is how long it takes for half of it to disintegrate. e.g. the half life of something is 3 seconds and you have 10 kg of it. after 3 secs you will have 5kg then 2.5 kg then 1.25 kg so on
