The Dock is the bar of icons that sits at the bottom or side of your screen. It provides easy access to some of the Apple applications on your Mac (such as Mail, Safari, iTunes, Address Book, and QuickTime Player), displays which applications are currently running, and holds windows in their minimized state. It's also the place to find the Trash (its icon looks like a waste basket). For your convenience, you can add your own applications, files, and folders to the Dock too.
Well, the term has a few different meanings, when referring to the MAC OS X operating System.
The first meaning of "Dock" could be the physical dock that one can actually plug their iPod, external hard drive, etc. into.
The second meaning of "Dock" could mean what is shown connected to the computer, via the screen.
The third meaning of "Dock" could mean the bar similar to the taskbar on a Windows computer. It shows popular applications, shortcuts, etc.
It's either that "row of icons" at the bottom or sidesof the window or that springy thing with that row of icons that keep popping up when you put the cursor near the edge or bottom of screen.
Windows has a similar set up (Task/Toolbar?).

There are only two important versions of Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, and regular Mac OS X. Mac OS X server was designed for servers, while regular Mac OS X was designed for most computers. The current version of Mac OS X (10.6) is named Snow Leopard.
