Pretty much as the name implies.. you use it to mix ingredients for cooking or baking. I suppose you could use it for mixing other things of a non-food nature, but food is its primary intended use.

The reason why I chose that is because the mixing bowl can complete creating a cake batter, which will eventually be sent off to the oven to be changed/baked. In that case, I guess the oven would be the Golgi.

You could find a mixing bowl set at your local kitchen and cooking shop. You could find it this in Macy's or cuisinart as well as online retailer such as amazon.
If it's a hand mixer - insert the mixing arms, hold it in the bowl of whatever you are mixing and turn it on... keep it in the bowl or else food will fly all over the place. If it's a standing mixer - just turn it on and it does the rest for you. Happy Mixing!
