In the UK school system middle management is the level below the Senior Leadership Team. The middle managers are all teachers (and occasionally non-teaching staff) who have TLR (Teaching and Learning Responsibility) points.
Examples of middle managers in UK secondary schools would be:
Heads of Year (sometimes called Learning Directors for specific years)
Heads of Department (sometimes called Learning Leaders)
Heads of Faculty (sometimes called Learning Leaders)
Head of Keystage for a specific subject (sometimes called Keystage coordinators)
And assistants/deputies for the above posts.
Middle managers in UK primary schools would be those with a TLR for a specified role.
Below the middle managers are the school teachers. Normal teachers may have specified responsibilities such as for Gifted and Talented but these will be unpaid and will have no line management component.
Above the middle managers are the Senior Leadership Team these are the Assistant and Deputy Head teachers. The SLT are not paid on the TLR scheme but are, instead on the Upper Management Payscheme.
