How does incubation temperature affect the colony morphology of Serratia marcescens?

These gram negative rods produce mucoid colonies which have entire margins and umbonate elevation. There are both red and white colonies present on a plate. Some strains of S. marcescensproduce the red pigment prodigiosin in response to incubation at 30o C, but do not do so at 37o C. This is an example of temperature-regulated phenotypic expression.

What do the Cowper's glands do?

Pre-ejaculate is a clear mucoid fluid produced by accessory sex glands and expressed on sexual stimulation into the urethra. The organs that produce this fluid are Cowper glands, the glands of Littre, and possibly the glands of Morgagni. Pre-ejaculate volume may range in normal men from a few drops to more than 5 mL. Pre-ejaculate functions naturally as a chemical neutralizer to the urine's residual acidity in the urethra and thus provides the basic pH of the semen, allowing for safe passage of sperm (Chughtai et al, 2005).

How are bacteria classified?

Bacteria are classified in many ways. Most bacteria are classified by their shape, cell wall, movement, eating, and breathing. The most useful technique of classification would be the Gram stain. The Gram stain distinguishes between differences in the cell wall composition of bacteria (Gram positive or Gram negative). The shape of the bacteria could be spherical (coccus), rod (bacillus), spirochete, or vibrio (curved rod). The texture could be wet/moist, dry, or mucoid. Bacteria come in a wide variety of colors.

What is the importance of Protozoans in clinical and veterinary?

Wow, is that a big question and expanding field with so many Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Chrohn's disease cases these days. Protozoal parasites are passed through water, food, and fecal contamination (which includes our hands if we don't wash them often). Symptoms of protozoa l infections include: mucoid or bloody diarrhea, colitis, severe diarrhea with fever, enlarged livers, liver abscesses and abdominal pain among lots of other gut symptoms. Diagnosis is kind of tricky and often the doctor won't take a simple fecal sample and check it under the microscope (and the feces has to be really fresh). The outbreaks can come in waves so that the parasite does not show up upon exam even when they do take a sample. Giardia is often missed for intestinal discomfort cases and often the medications used for protozoal parasites are not that effective and act to further disrupt the gut flora. Then you have a big mess. Homeopathic drops, balancing the gut flora, and getting to the source of the infection (like submitting a water sample for testing) are the best ways to treat these kind of cases.

Solution for rabbit diarrhea?

Give your rabbit lots of roughage, clean oat straw or weed free timothy hay. Check your pellets for contamination, maybe throw them out and get a new bag. You can give your bunny kaopectate or pepto bismo, a few drops at a time. Make sure it is common diarrhea and not mucoid enteritis. Mucoid enteritis can be detected by gently shaking your bunny. If it sounds like it is full of water mucoid enteritis is present. See a vet immediately. Mucoid enteritis is usually found in young bunnies.

What type of tissue is found in the umbilical cord?

The surface of the umbilical cord is comprised of amniotic epithelium contiguous with the placenta and fetus. The connective tissue of the umbilical cord is of extraembryonic mesoderm origin, composed of Wharton's jelly (mucoid connective tissue) and sparsely distributed cells, including, stromal mesenchymal cells, contractile cells, macrophages, mast cells and myofibroblasts. It also contains a large quantity of water which aids in the prevention of umbilical blood vessel compression. There are umbilical arteries (2) and a vein inside the mucoid tissue.
