An IP address (also called an IP number) is a number (typically written as four numbers separated by periods, i.e. 107.4.1.3 or 84.2.1.111) which uniquely identifies a computer that is making use of the internet. It is analogous to your telephone number in that the telephone number is used by the telephone network to direct calls to you. The IP address is used by the Internet to direct data to your computer, e.g. the data your web browser retrieves and displays when you surf the net. One task of DHCP is to assist in the problem of getting a functional and unique IP number into the hands of the computers that make use of the Internet.

An IP address is a network address of the PC (computer) you are using.ANSWER: IP stands for Internet Protocol. It is like the address on the front of your house only it is an address that is compatible with the Internet. Just like no two houses can have the same mail address, no two computers can have the same IP address. To find what the IP address of your computer is, go to START, RUN. Type IPCONFIG/ ALL and click OK. A black DOS box should show up with the IP address of your computer listed.

An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a numerical identification (logical address) that is assigned to devices participating in a computer network.

Answer

An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a numerical identification (logical address) that is assigned to devices participating in a computer networkutilizing the Internet Protocol for communication between its nodes.[1] Although IP addresses are stored as binary numbers, they are usually displayed in human-readable notations, such as 208.77.188.166 (for IPv4), and 2001:db8:0:1234:0:567:1:1 (for IPv6). The role of the IP address has been characterized as follows: "A name indicates what we seek. An address indicates where it is. A route indicates how to get there."[2]

The original designers of TCP/IP defined an IP address as a 32-bit number[1] and this system, now named Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4), is still in use today. However, due to the enormous growth of the Internet and the resulting depletion of the address space, a new addressing system (IPv6), using 128 bits for the address, was developed

An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a numerical label that is assigned to devices connected in a computer network. It uses the Internet Protocol (IP) for communication between its computer called as nodes. It is a 32 Bit Number which is further divided into 4 octets.

Static IP addresses enable the same computer to be contacted under the same address at any time. Dynamic IP addresses are allocated to customers of an ISP (Internet Service Provider). They receive an unoccupied IP address which will not be the same every time.

An IP address is a unique address that computing devices use to identify itself and communicate with other devices in a network.

An IP address (IP stands for Internet Protocol) is a bit like your house and steet address, only a bit less "fleshed out". It, with the associated routing information, is more like a combination of a street address and pointed directions of where to go and how to get there.

Imagine, that every building in your city had a number. Now, imagine that every city in your country had a number. Between these cities, there would always be a building numbered "1". Now imagine that every country in the world used this addressing scheme. Getting a headache already? I hope not. :-)

It may seem overly complex and hard to grasp at first, but it's a lot more scalable than street addresses when you have a limited vocabulary (inside computers, everything must be represented as numbers, the most basic of which are "1" and "0").

In order to go from "Country 7, City 25, Street 16, House 137" to "Country 239, City 120, Street 1, House 13", big roads would have to be built, and on these roads, posts would have to be stationed to tell you which way to go to get where you're going. The countries here are private networks, the roads are the Internet - the "Network of Networks" - and the posts are routers interconnecting the networks. The routers tell you that if you want to reach Country 239, you have to go either through Country 112 or Country 213, but they would advise you to go through Country 112, because 213's roads seem a bit slow today...

Forget about the countries analogy... An IP address is a identification number assigned to a networking device (like a PC) connected to a network. It must be unique within its own network, but doesn't need to be unique globally - that's what the routers are for. Of course, all addresses public to the Internet must be unique, but these are commonly assigned to whole networks instead of single computers (although there is quite a number of exceptions). Or, rather, these are assigned in bulk to countries and geographical locations. Together with routing information, the IP address consitutes a unique path which allows you to reliably make a connection from your computer to some other, remote device/computer "somewhere out there", and do something useful.

It is how your computer/device is identified

There are two kind of ip addresses-external and internal. External is visible to the public and identifies how your computer is connected to a network. Internal can only be accessed by an administrators account and allows you to access that computer. The internal ip is over 100 digits but is shortened to only about 11 digits.

IP addresses are unique.

Each IP Address defines, one and only one, connection to the internet.

Two devices on the internet can never have the same address at the same time.

However, if a device has two connections to the internet, via two networks, it has two IP addresses

The IP addressing system must be accepted by any host universally

An IP address is a 32 bit binary number.

It is usually represented as 4 decimal values.

Each decimal value represented by 8 bits, in the range 0 to 255 (known as octets) separated by decimal points.

There are two common notations to show an IP address.

They are

Binary notation

Dotted decimal notation

In classful addressing, the address space is divided into five classes:

A, B, C, D and E.

We can find the class of an address when the address is given in binary notation or dotted-decimal notation.

IP address is the logical address. We need IP address because an IP address is unique universally. Thus IP address can be used to uniquely identify a system in the network.
