A possible region might be Polynesia. Patagonia, the American Southwest, the Carribean, the Yucatan, the Middle East or Southeat Asia. True they are all open to a refinement of defenition, borders and boundaries. Some may or might have fixed longitudes and latitudes but most are defined by culture and society.
For example: The American Southwest for Geographer "A" will assume that the term means Open Range, Cattle, Cowboys and Range Wars. He or she would include Wyoming and possibly Montana into that classification. Geographer "B" will insist that Montana, Wyoming and even Colorado don't belong because they can hardly be called southern states. Both might agree that while California is both South an West, it could never be considered a component of the American Southwest.
Hawaii is very far south and very far west and even has a cowboy tradition. But the American Southwest it will never be.
The truth is that such terms are often conflicting, confusing and even meaningless. Can and should Alaska be termed a part of the Pacific Northwest and where does Idaho belong. Kansas is obviously farming country more associated with Iowa, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio. but Oklahoma was part of the Comanchera and a barren and useless Indian Reservation (Until they struck oil and found that wheat could grow on lands that were wasted on Buffalo Herds.) How do you account for the history of Dodge City and the National Grasslands as part of the Cornbelt.
