West Virginia was formed when it succeeded from Virginia. West Virginia was officially admitted into the Union on June 20, 1863. Virginia was for slavery and had succeeded from the US, but a part of Virginia wanted to stay with the Union, so it succeeded from the rest of Virginia, and since it was to the west of Virginia, it was called West Virginia.
Virginia extends both farther west and east. Virginia is under both west Virginia and Ohio while west Virginia obviously doesnt extend past Ohio. So therefore, Virginia extends farther west.
