You needed to buy a storage device and connect your xbox to the Internet.
you need to buy it. just go to walmart, and they have an entire box of the items needed for xbox live.
Its not that they wanted them to have it but the orignal xbox live was out of date and costed them to run out of date servers that was not needed and not used as much as the newer servers.
Xbox Live is not needed to install the Shivering Isles expansion pack but Xbox Live Silver will be needed to download this expansion pack. Unless you have purchased the Game of the Year edition in which Shivering Isles is included on one the extra discs to download directly to your hard drive.
Xbox live is needed to get DLC. However you do not have to pay for the gold membership. Set up a silver xbox live account, which is free, and you will be able to access the marketplace and get game downloads.
You'll need a friend with you in real life, so you can share a screen. Your friend will have to add their controller, and then you can play. As for XBOX Live, split screen isn't needed as your playing on different consoles. Just invite them to an XBOX party and you can invite them to your minecraft game, no split screen needed.
It is still Xbox Live.
