The net charge is the charge that there is more of in an object. For example, if an object has 5 electrons (negative charges) and 4 protons (positive charges), then the net charge is negative because there are more electrons in the object. If the object gains 2 protons through the transfer of electric charge then the net charge becomes positive. However, if the object loses 1 proton to have an equal amount of both protons and electrons, then the net charge becomes nuetral.

Net charge is the charge on a whole compound instead of each separate ion.

For example let's say you have the ionic compound sodium sulfide (Na2S.) The sodium by itself has a charge of 1+, written as Na+. The sulfur by itself has a charge of 2-, which you would write like S2-. By themselves, both of these ions have charges, but when you combine them together to make Na2S, they have a "net charge," or charge of both of them together, of zero. This is because when you add their charges together, 2(I+) + 1(2-) it equals zero. Therefore this compound has a net charge of zero.

If it asks for the number of each ion needed for a net charge of zero, you would say that for each S2- ion you would need two Na+ ions. This way their charges would add up to equal zero.

The net atomic charge of any atom is equal to the number of protons in its nucleus, or its atomic number, which is drawn from that. This will be true regardless of which isotope of an element we consider. Let's look at an example to make our point.

We know that the element iron (Fe) has three stable isotopes. They are Fe-56, Fe-57, and Fe-58. All iron atoms have 26 protons in their nucleus, so all iron atoms, regardless of which isotope, have a +26 charge on their nuclei. The same thinking can be applied to any (and every) element on the Periodic Table.

The net charge of an elemental atom is zero, or neutral. The net charge of an ionic atom is determined by how many electrons the atom has in comparison to the number of protons the atom has.
