A new technique has been developed for improving cancer surgery. The technique uses a special tool, called iKnife (Inteligent Knife) that can differentiate cancerous cells from healthy cells, thus leading to a more successful removal of the cancerous tumour. Not only has the new surgical tool delivered 100% accuracy during the trial, but it managed to do that during operation and within three seconds of time, eliminating the need for laboratory sample analysis, thus significantly shortening the general anaesthetic time.
How does it work? In a simplified explanation, the targeted cells are destroyed by heating up by electric currents, the iKnife is able to analyse the resulted fumes. Since cancerous cells have some different chemicals from healthy cells, it is possible to differentiate them right there, during the operation. The technique can be used not only for identifying cells of several cancer types, but has a potential for evaluating blood supply of certain tissues and even for bacterial identification.
