What did the Britain do to encourage U.S. participation in the war?

When Pearl Harbor happened, that was what drew us in.During the second world war, it was Hitler's actions (and the overt threat he represented) that did more to get the US to assist the British, then anything the British were saying or doing.US President Roosevelt did not need encouragement to help Great Britain in its war with Hitler's Germany. After the war started in Europe on September 1, 1939, the United States was officially neutral. However, after the neutral countries of Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Yugoslavia, & Greece were attacked and conquered by Hitler (1940-1941), it became very clear to President Roosevelt that Hitler would not ultimately respect a nation's neutrality. The US government began to help the allies (France & Britain) in small ways at first. The assistance would grow as the threat from Hitler grew. The other major turning point in the US government's desire to assist the British, came in May 1940 when Germany defeated and occupied France. It appeared that the British would be conquered next by Hitler unless the US could help in anyway possible, short of war. The US stepped up its assistance to Britain in various ways.If you are interested, below is more details about the war in Europe, and US efforts to avoid (or prepare for) war or assist the allies (prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor & subsequent German declaration of war on the US):U.S. Neutrality & President Roosevelt's Efforts to Help G.B.: April 1940-December 1940April 1940: Iceland, a territory of Denmark, declares independence to avoid German occupation and permit Allied help.May 3, 1940: Greenland, another Danish territory, is declared under the protection of the United States as part of the Western Hemisphere neutrality (or Pan-American Security) zone. The American government & public are shocked and concerned by the invasion of the two neutral nations of Denmark & Norway. The rapid German successes and the inability of the Allies to stop Germany were clearly ominous signs to American leaders. President Roosevelt's already pessimistic view of French & British military capability is reinforced by these events.U.S. government & military establishment shocked and alarmed by the sudden defeat of France.U.S. military secret planning begins to consider the possibility that Britain will be occupied, and that any future U.S. involvement in the war will require operations to originate in North America.British government begins planning to set-up alternate government site in Canada. The strong Axis momentum in Europe (everyone assumes Germany will win) has many other negative effects: Many "Neutrals" (Sweden, Switzerland & Spain) are leaning towards a more overt support of Germany. More Balkan countries lean towards actively joining the Axis. The Soviets become more aggressive & overt in their territorial demands on its neighbors.American population grew increasingly uneasy about events in Europe.20 June 1940-FDR strengthens his cabinet by bringing in two prominent Republicans: Henry Stimson as Secretary of War; and Frank Knox as Secretary of the Navy. This will also help FDR solidify bi-partisan support of measures short of war. Stimson is a strong supporter of Lend-Lease aid to Britain. FDR hopes to get more Republicans on his side of the issues. Note: This is an election year.24-30 June 1940 Republican Party Convention in Philadelphia. Wendell Willkie is selected as the Presidential Candidate. The convention is overwhelmingly in favor of not intervening in the war in Europe.22 June 1940: Vichy France is created. The Vichy French will maintain control over France's colonies (and the military units in the colonies). The proximity of some French colonies to the USA is a potential threat. The amount of influence that the Vichy Government has on French colonies is directly related to the proximity of the colony to Vichy France (and Axis forces).28 June 1940: Alien Registration Act (Smith Act) approved in Congress. It is becoming obvious that the German U-Boat threat is much greater than it was in WWI. However, Japan in not obligated to go to war with the current enemies of Germany and Italy. The three parties announce that they will declare war on any third party that attempts to enter the war against any one of the three. This is primarily aimed at the United States, to prevent America's entry into the war in Europe and prevent American interference in Asia.16 October 1940 US Registration begins for the military draft (Selective Service Act). 16 million Americans have registered for the draft. The first drafts start on 29 October 1940.5 November 1940 US Politics: FDR re-elected to unprecedented third term by a 10% margin of victory in the popular vote.
