Nuclear explosions produce both immediate and delayed destructive effects. Blast, thermal radiation, and prompt ionizing radiation cause significant destruction within seconds or minutes of a nuclear detonation. The delayed effects, such as radioactive fallout and other environmental effects, inflict damage over an extended period ranging from hours to years.

Nuclear fallout is any matter that is ejected into the atmosphere that remains solid or is re-condensed and falls back to Earth. It is comprised mostly of alpha and beta particles, but can contain some gamma emitters. Alpha a beta particles are relatively easy to defend against; full body covering, respirators (gas masks), and thorough washing upon moving indoors can protect humans and animals from most of the damaging effects of these solids. Gamma radiation is a different situation, and evacuation from the area or removal of the emitters is the only viable solution.

  4. vaporized and oxidized debris picked up from the ground that absorbed neutrons and became radioactive
  5. larger debris picked up from the ground that absorbed neutrons and became radioactive, ot that radioactive vaporized materials condensed on the surface of this debris.

Can you stop nuclear fallout?

Since fallout is created when a nuclear explosion lifts dirt and debris particles into the air and irradiates them, there is no way to 'stop' nuclear fallout from occurring except by never exploding a nuclear weapon on or near the ground. You CAN stop nuclear fallout from reaching you, though, if you have a good strong shelter that is lined with enough dirt or sand (or thick walls and ceilings using many feet of metal and/or concrete), etc.
