You've opened a can of worms with this question. Great Britain (or just Britain) is the geographical name of the island - although close islands such as the Isle of Wight are usually included in the term. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the political description of what the UK government governs. The British Isles is a geographical term that includes the whole of Ireland.
