The olykoek is an early form of doughnut. Early doughnuts were simply fried cake batter. The olykoek was a Dutch version and to deal with the fact that the outside cooked faster than the inside the inside portion of the olykoek was filled with a sweet fruit mixture. Of course the big solution to the problem was to cut a hole in the middle and the doughnut took the form it has today.
