All of Beowulf's men desert him except Wiglaf in his final battle against the dragon. The narrator chastises them for their cowardice and so does Wiglaf in a speech. Beowulf kills the dragon but he is assisted by Wiglaf. Beowulf receives a mortal wound and orders Wiglaf to bring him treasure they had won from the dragon's tower lair. Beowulf also instructs the thane on his burial wishes which he executes very well.

During the final battle, Beowulf's men retreat in fear, leaving him to face the dragon alone. This act of abandonment foreshadows Beowulf's inevitable death as he battles the dragon unsupported. It highlights the dark and foreboding nature of the battle and emphasizes Beowulf's loneliness and vulnerability in his final moments.

When Beowulf was fighting the dragon he went up in flames. His men deserted him even though they always boasted they'd fight with him, for him, etc because of all he did for them. The only comrade that did not desert Beowulf is Wiglaf. Wiglaf chided the men and aided Beowulf in killing the dragon then upholding Beowulf's wishes of building a tower so all men would know who he was, after he died.
