A Navy big enough to blockade the Southern ports, making it impossible for the Confederacy to export its cotton in exchange for war supplies.

During the American Civil War, the North enjoyed numerous advantages over the South from the start of the conflict onward. Prior to the formal outbreak of the American Civil War, a variety of developments gave the North a decided advantage over the South once hostilities erupted. A larger population (and thus the potential for a larger army) was one advantage. Tremendously greater industrial capacity along with a sophisticated and more numerous navy (and merchant fleet) were two others. The existence of an organized and operational federal administrative body was yet another advantage.

Railroads were used in the Civil War to transport supplies and troops to the battlefield. Since the North had more of the railroads, they were able to use it greatly to their advantage, and it was one of the reasons they were able to win the war.
