Although wind energy is the perfect alternative fuel source, it can be very expensive. The cost to build a wind turbine can be around $150,000 to $200,000 - about the cost of the average house. This high start-up price can bankrupt the average civilian, which is why only the wealthy can afford it, but only by investing and carefully budgeting their money wisely. Despite the initial start-up price, the amount of electricity it produces is phenomenal - 5000 kilowatts per hour. Although this statistic only applies to windy areas that have a minimum wind speed of about 25 miles per hour, the money saved from spending less on electricity bills saves people money in the long run.

Wind turbines can also kill or injure birds and bats.

In a wind farm why are some turbines spinning and others are not?

If some turbines are spinning and some not, I suggest the only reason could be either defective units, or units undergoing maintenance. On days with decent wind, some turbines need to shut down. Not from the high wind but because the wind turbine company has agreed to provide a certain amount of power and when they have reached it there is no point in wearing out the turbines. There is usually at least one turbine on a farm that is being maintenanced at a time.

What does it cost to produce electricity using wind turbnes?

Wind turbines are enormously expensive to build and tricky to maintain. So far, they haven't really been a practical source of energy. New designs and more efficient turbines have been improving the prospects for wind power, but older turbines are prone to occasionally catastrophic and spectacular failures. The impact of wind turbines on bird populations has also been pretty bad; at least one pundit has described them as "eagle shredders".

What are the disadvantages of wind power?

Disadvantages of wind power:The strength of the wind is not constant and it varies from zero to storm force. This means that wind turbines do not produce the same amount of electricity all the time. Luckily, wind energy isn't produced in isolation. It's added to widely connected energy grids with 24 hour spot energy markets. It's added to grids that span thousands of kilometres and have many types of generation and demand. Up to about 20% of a grid's generation capacity, it requires very little backup. Some people see large wind turbines as unsightly structures and not pleasant or interesting to look at. They believe that wind turbines degrade the landscape.Wind turbines generate noise. A subset of people who live near wind turbines find this noise annoying. A subset of those people get stressed by it. Wind turbine noise does not make people sick.Birds are killed by wind turbines. Studies show that wind turbines do not threaten the vast majority of bird species populations. Killing birds, in other words, does not threaten birds generally. That said, wind turbines should not be sited on raptor migration routes, as the Altamont wind turbine farm was. The best evidence is that song birds migrate at 2000-4000 feet, far above wind turbines and sea birds avoid them according to radar and thermal studies of North Sea wind farms.Bats are also killed by wind turbines, due to barotraumic stress (the reduced air pressure behind a wind turbine blade is damaging to bat's lungs and heart). However, bats are not killed in significant numbers compared to their populations by wind turbines. Bats are, however, killed in significant numbers in North America by white nose syndrome (300,000 in one cave alone.)

How fast do wind turbines spin on average per minute?

It all depends on a number of factors, such as one of the most important ones being number of blades. Common wind turbines have varying amounts, so when you ask how fast on average, the question must be specified.

Why do people dislike wind power and why?

One reason why people disagree with wind power because Turbines can only cope with wind speeds of up to 30-35mph, otherwise they have to be shut down or else broken due to the speed of the wind

How many wind turbines are there in a wind farm?

The amount of wind turbines in a wind farm can vary from one farm to another. They can have as few as five or as many as 150 wind turbines. One of the largest wind farms is Alta Wind Energy center in Kern County, California. It has over 4,800 wind turbines.

Did a tornado strike wind turbines?

Yes there have been cases of tornadoes striking wind turbines. One in Oklahoma struck a set of turbines on November 7, 2011, though at the time it was not strong enough to damage them. On May 19, 2012 a tornado destroyed several wind turbines in Kansas.

What are some wind powered machines?

wind turbines are one of the many( that i do not know of) that produce energy by using wind

Why are wind turbines not placed next to one another?

The wind farmers usually want to spread them out so the propellers do not collide. They also want to spread the turbines out so that they can catch the wind wherever it is.

How are wind turbines transported?

Energy can not be created or destroyed but only changed from one form to another. Wind energy is changed to mechanical energy of the turbines. The turbines can then generate electricity.
