What is ordinal research?

In the social sciences, the ordinal model of gathering data has identity and magnitude. It's ranked by order, but not amount (i.e. the differences between all the data points on a list might not be equidistant). For example, class rank or GPA; the #1 person in the class might only have gotten a 4.0, the #2 person got a 3.95, and the #3 person got a 3.80.
